Organization Description

2nd Call is a community based organization designed to save lives, by reducing violence and assisting in the personal development of high risk individuals, proven offenders, ex-felons, parolees and others who society disregards.

Programs and Services

The overall objective is to offer both skills training (anger management, interpersonal communication, self-esteem) and vocational training (building resumes, direct contacts with employment opportunities with the electrical workers union). They also link individuals to substance use, mental health, and public services (welfare, DMV, WIC).

Program Information

We serve Ex-Convicts, especially those for serious violent crimes (e.g. armed robbery; homicide), gang members attempting to leave the gang, hard drug users attempting to quit, and victims/ family members of victims of crime.

Health & Safety

The meetings are held in the basements of churches. The locations of these churches are in the areas associated with high crime, violence and gangs. These are the same areas that many Cal State LA students also reside in and/or have been raised in. In this respect, attending 2nd call meetings in the church basements exposes the students to no levels of risk above and beyond what they might encounter in their own neighborhoods. There are no specific risks students will be exposed to in the churches.
