Motor Neuroscience Laboratory Research InternshipAt — Cal Poly Pomona - Motor Neuroscience Laboratory
The Motor Neuroscience Laboratory offers students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in human movement, force control, and neuromuscular research. Under faculty supervision, students may assist with research activities such as literature review, participant preparation, data collection, equipment setup, data processing, and basic data analysis. Students will also learn about laboratory safety, research ethics, participant confidentiality, and professional conduct in an academic research environment. This opportunity is designed to support students interested in kinesiology, biomechanics, neuroscience, rehabilitation, and related health fields by providing applied learning experiences that connect classroom knowledge with real-world research practice. Depending on project needs and student preparation, responsibilities may include observing laboratory procedures, assisting with ongoing studies, and contributing to scholarly activities. The experience emphasizes mentorship, skill development, critical thinking, and professional growth while promoting safe, evidence-based, and meaningful engagement in research.
Students will have learned fundamental laboratory safety practices, research ethics, participant confidentiality, and professional conduct in an academic research setting. They will also gain practical experience in research procedures related to human movement, force control, and neuromuscular function, including data collection, equipment use (electromyogram, motion capture, force measure etc), data management, and basic analysis. In addition, students will strengthen their critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and understanding of how scientific research informs health, rehabilitation, and human performance.
Students will receive training in laboratory safety, research ethics, participant confidentiality, study protocols, human participant procedures, equipment use, data collection, and basic data processing and analysis. Training will be provided through orientation, faculty-led instruction, hands-on practice with laboratory equipment and procedures, and ongoing supervision to support safe, accurate, and professional performance.
Students will be informed of safety expectations related to laboratory procedures, equipment use, participant interaction, ergonomics, and emergency response. Before participating in any activities, students will complete orientation and receive training on safe conduct in the laboratory, proper use of equipment, confidentiality, and procedures for reporting concerns or incidents. All activities will be supervised by faculty and/or authorized laboratory personnel, and students will only perform duties appropriate to their training and assigned responsibilities.
Interested students may be asked to submit a resume and a brief statement of interest describing their academic background, career goals, and interest in research. An informal meeting and/or interview may also be requested to discuss availability, responsibilities, and fit with current laboratory projects. Additional onboarding requirements may be communicated prior to placement, depending on project needs and university procedures.
