Middle School Program InternAt — Our Neighborhood Homework House

Opportunity Summary 

An internship at Homework House provides hands-on experience working with middle school students while developing leadership and facilitation skills. Interns help lead short activities and conversations focused on friendship, belonging, and healthy conflict resolution. They also assist with prepping materials, observing group dynamics, and gathering student feedback. By the end of the internship, students contribute ideas to a belonging and friendships report that helps strengthen the program. Interns leave with practical experience in youth development, teamwork, and making a positive impact in the Azusa community.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Learning Outcomes: - Youth Facilitation Skills: The intern will develop the ability to plan and facilitate short, engaging activities for middle school students that promote belonging, friendship. and healthy communication. - Understanding youth development: The intern will gain insight into middle school social development, including how students form friendships, experience inclusion, and navigate conflict. - Observation and Reflection Skills: The intern will learn how to observe group dynamics, identify participation patterns, and document meaningful reflections from youth interactions. - Program planning and preparation: The intern will build skills in designing age-appropriate discussion prompts, surveys, and activities that support student engagement. - Collaboration and Teamwork: The intern will work alongside staff to prepare sessions, support students, and contribute ideas that strengthen the program.

Opportunity Training 

Our interns participate in several trainings to ensure they are well prepared and supported in their role. First, they complete an organizational onboarding orientation, where they learn about the organization's history, how it was founded, and our mission. This orientation also covers key organizational policies, email and technology setup, and includes a site tour so interns can become familiar with the space and staff. Interns also receive program-specific training led by their direct supervisor. This training covers program structure, schedules, expectations, an overview of projects they will support and key timelines and due dates. In addition, interns complete Mandated Reporter and Ministry Safe training to ensure they understand best practices for youth safety, boundaries, and reporting responsibilities when working with students.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

This internship takes place in a supervised youth program setting with middle school students. Interns must follow all organizational safety policies, including maintaining professional boundaries and adhering to supervision guidelines. Interns will complete Mandated Reporter training and Ministry Safe training to recognize and report concerns to youth safety and well-being. Staff members are always present during student sessions, and interns will not be left alone with students. Interns will also receive guidance on maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
