Opportunity Summary Join the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace veterinary team for a hands-on internship focused on the intersection of high-quality animal care and the human-animal bond. As a Medical Intern, you will work alongside our veterinary professionals in a state-of-the-art facility to support the health and well-being of rescue animals awaiting adoption. Interns will have the opportunity to observe clinical procedures, assist with daily health screenings, and learn about the specialized protocols required in a high-volume adoption center. This role is ideal for students passionate about shelter medicine, animal science, and community education. You will gain invaluable experience in a collaborative environment dedicated to saving lives and fostering animal-friendly communities.
By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned to perform clinical observations and assist with daily health screenings within a professional shelter environment. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of shelter medicine protocols, including disease prevention and animal wellness assessments. Furthermore, students will develop proficiency in animal handling techniques and behavioral observation skills aimed at reducing animal stress, while learning to effectively communicate complex health information to a multi-disciplinary team.
Students will complete a comprehensive on-site orientation focused on PetSpace’s organizational protocols and safety standards. Training includes hands-on demonstrations for safe animal handling and specific instruction on using our assessment tools to evaluate animal behavior and health. Throughout the placement, students will receive direct mentorship and shadowing opportunities with experienced professionals to ensure they can accurately observe, assist, and eventually perform responsibilities under supervision.
All interns must complete mandatory safety training focused on animal behavior and "Fear Free" handling techniques to minimize risk. Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required and provided for all medical and animal-handling tasks. Students will be supervised at all times during direct animal contact by experienced staff to ensure a safe environment. Additionally, our facility adheres to strict sanitation and zoonotic disease prevention protocols to protect the health of all participants.
