This opportunity allows students to gain hands-on experience in hospice care by supporting patients and families during end-of-life care. Students will assist with companionship visits, emotional support, and volunteer coordination activities while working alongside a multidisciplinary healthcare team. This role is ideal for students interested in healthcare, public health, or social services who want meaningful patient interaction and exposure to real-world care settings.
Students will develop communication and active listening skills, understand hospice philosophy and end-of-life care, demonstrate professionalism and patient confidentiality, and gain experience working with interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Students will receive a structured hospice volunteer training program before beginning their role. This training includes an introduction to hospice philosophy and end-of-life care, communication and active listening skills, patient confidentiality (HIPAA), and professional boundaries. They will also be trained on how to provide emotional support to patients and families, assist with comfort measures, and respond appropriately to sensitive situations such as grief and bereavement. Ongoing education, supervision, and peer support opportunities are provided to ensure students feel confident and supported in their responsibilities.
Students will receive training on infection control, patient safety, HIPAA compliance, and professional boundaries. All interactions are supervised, and students are not responsible for medical procedures.
