Habitat Restoration InternAt — Newport Bay Conservancy
Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) is seeking a Restoration Intern who will support the implementation and success of NBC’s Lower Constellation Coastal Sage Scrub and High Marsh Restoration Project. This role assists with habitat restoration activities including restoration site preparation, invasive species management, native plant propagation, volunteer support, and community outreach. This role reports to the Habitat Restoration Manager and Restoration Coordinator. This position is ideal for a student or early-career professional interested in habitat restoration, wetland ecology, conservation, and community-based environmental work.

Students will be given a thorough orientation to our organization and the work our restoration team conducts. We will ensure to cover the grant project they will mainly be working on in depth and they will have our close guidance throughout the year to ensure they are successful in meeting the grant requirements we must meet. We will also provide safety briefings before conducting field work to ensure the work gets done as safely as possible. They will also be given the opportunity to participate in survey protocol trainings pertaining to different projects we're involved with around Upper Newport Bay, but this will be dependent on if time permits and the tasks for the specific grant they're working on aren't due immediately.
For this role, interns may be asked to lift up to 45 lbs, walk on uneven terrain, and utilize hand tools such as but not limited to pruning saws, hand tillers, steel weeders, shovels, etc. Students will be given a safety briefing regarding tool usage, environmental hazards, and other safety precautions as necessary before fieldwork is conducted to ensure restoration activities are performed in a safe manner. Students will also be given proper PPE to perform assigned duties.
