As an intern, you'll play a vital role in supporting underserved communities while building essential skills for your future career. 1) For English speakers: blood pressure, fingerstick (if certified), height and weight, front office administrative activities in a medical clinic, marketing, strategic planning, fund development, writing articles on the need for health access, updating website, program evaluation, exercise program implementation, Reach Out and Read program assistance, medication tech assistance
2) For Spanish Speaking: patient translation, conduct patient telephone surveys, data collection, nutrition education, patient assistance, clinic outreach program to local businesses and in uninsured communities.
Westminster Free Clinic is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.
Students will develop and implement evaluation tools, such as surveys and assessments, to gather feedback and improve clinic services. Students will enhance their communication and interpersonal skills by interacting with patients, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds. Students will understand the operations of a nonprofit healthcare clinic, including its mission, challenges, and impact on underserved populations. Exhibit professionalism and ethical behavior in accordance with HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards.
Students will begin with an overview of clinic to familiarize themselves with the mission, values, and operations of our clinic. This includes a tour of the facility, introductions to staff, and an outline of internship responsibilities and expectations. Students will learn about the communities they will serve and the importance of professionalism and compassion in all interactions. Interns will also be trained to develop and implement evaluation tools such as surveys, patient feedback forms, and assessments. They will learn basic principles of tool design, data collection, and simple data analysis using platforms like Google Forms or Excel to help improve clinic services. To support meaningful interactions with patients, students will receive cultural competency and communication training focused on serving diverse populations with empathy and respect. Training will also include instruction on electronic medical record systems, ensuring students can confidently support clinic operations.
Safety recommendations will be provided during the clinic overview training.
