Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Camarillo Public Library
We have many volunteer opportunities at the Camarillo Public Library! Make new friends and support your community by volunteering with us.
1) Service-learning students are needed to serve as homework coaches and work with children in grades K-8 to complete homework assignments and school projects in all subject areas for the library’s Esper A. Petersen Homework Center. Students would receive a brief orientation and computer training that includes an explanation of changes to math instruction as a result of the 2010 Common Core State Standards. This opportunity takes place on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.
2) Students can serve as tech coaches for library patrons (generally seniors) to help reinforce digital literacy skills through personal instruction and drop-in tutoring. Tech Coaches will also guide users through the process of accessing the Library’s electronic resources, such as ebooks, databases, and downloadable audiobooks. The program currently takes place on Saturdays from 2 to 3 p.m.
3) The Young Adult Center is a newly remodeled space that buzzes with activity from teens after school. An average of 101 teens visit each day to study, hangout, and participate in weekly activities. The library is seeking service-learning students to serve as leads for space during after school hours, 3 to 6 p.m. Days of the week are flexible in terms of scheduling. Student leads will work alongside a library staff person to form meaningful connections with the teens, perform readers' advisory and make book recommendations, enforce policy standards, and implement engaging activities with the Teen Advisory Board.
The Camarillo Library is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.
Students will learn about the mission, services, and population this organization serves and the issues that impact this population.
All volunteers will have an orientation led by the Volunteer Coordinator or Adult Literacy Coordinator.
All volunteers will have to sign a volunteer liability form, which will cover safety information such as inspecting surroundings.
