Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Museum of Ventura County

Opportunity Summary

1) Research Library and Archives – As the County's historical repository, the Library has an obligation to collect and interpret the history of all communities. Projects may encompass historical research related to underrepresented populations, oral history collection development, Spanish to English translation of historical documents for online access, or others proposed by faculty.

2) Education - Museums, as informal learning spaces, are uniquely positioned to help both teachers and parents encourage the socio-emotional development of students whose social learning experience has been severely impacted by the isolation brought on by COVID school closures. Conduct a research project to determine the best way for MVC to help fill this need for educators and families.

3) Marketing/Communications – Create short-form videos, using Museum collections, to create engagement with county history, exhibits, and art, via the Museum’s social media channels. Topics should include the broad diversity of communities and subjects in Ventura County.

The Museum of Ventura County is interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Depending on the project, students should have a better understanding of the important educational role Museums play in our society. They will have gained real world experience developing social media content to drive engagement, while also learning about local history. In the Library, students can expect to gain a better understanding of how our society records our history, as well as gaining understanding of the diverse history and culture of the county's diverse communities. Additionally, if working to survey teachers, students should learn how to develop a project plan and then execute in order to gather useful information for decision making.

Opportunity Training

Project specific training will be developed depending on the project. Each department will have one staff member assigned to oversite the project, with written guidelines and an orientation for students.
