On-site School Field Trip FacilitatorAt — Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
Join our team of in-person field trip educators, bringing a sense of awe and wonder for the natural world to kids of all ages. We serve schools and teachers local to Santa Barbara and as far as Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo. We are looking for 1-4 students to work with us as facilitators and educators when kids visit the Museum on our field trips, with the possibility of training to be solo presenters if the student is interested and the fit is good. Candidates should be reliable, friendly, comfortable speaking publicly, and proficient -- or a quick study -- with group management and basic natural science. Training will be provided.
We require a commitment of at least one day a week for a three- to four-hour shift.
BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE CONTACT Charlotte Zeamer, School and Teacher Services Manager (czeamer@sbnature2.org) with your resume and a brief letter of application (no more than one page) describing your background and interest in this opportunity. Dr. Zeamer will respond to you about the next steps in the selection process for our volunteer Museum Educators.
How to engage audiences and support a fun and dynamic educational program. How to bring science content to children and teachers grades K-12 with energy and enthusiasm, engendering wonder and new interest in the audience. How to work well with other educators. How to use rich visual content to weave a compelling narrative about science and good stewardship of a precious and vulnerable natural world.
We will take new students through training and shadowing early in this volunteer experience to ensure they can perform the tasks of a field trip facilitator or educator or take a supporting role. We will train and monitor students on appropriate professional appearance, poise and bearing with a public audience, and will clearly lay out how to work as an educator in a team of other volunteer educators. If there is an interest and clear aptitude, we will provide ongoing feedback and support to help students to transition from a support role to a lead presenter of the Museum field trip programs.
