Downtown Streets Team [inactive]

Organization Description

We provide homeless and low-income men and women with the resources they need to rebuild their lives. First, they volunteer on one of our teams and begin working collaboratively on beautification projects. Team Members are held accountable and trusted to complete tasks, show up on time, and work well with others. Those who show dedication and leadership skills have the ability to rise up to become Team Leads, then Managers, and supervise others with little or no supervision from staff. In return, Team Members receive a non-cash stipend to help cover their basic needs, while taking advantage of our case management and employment services to find housing and a job. Our ultimate goal is to transition Team Members into employment because having a job restores hope and opens the door to other opportunities. Our model is structured to be a one-year transitional program into permanent housing and employment.

Opportunities:

Community Cleanup - Join our Team Members as the beautify your local neighborhood and city streets. As you work side-by-side picking up debris, you’ll get the chance to speak with our Team Members who are working to regain self-sufficiency and challenge perceptions of homelessness.

Community Outreach - Connect with your community as you distribute hygiene kits to people experiencing homelessness. Alongside DST staff and Team Members, you’ll build relationships with and offer resources to unhoused members of the Hayward community.

General Support - Gain administrative experience as you support our office staff on tasks such as data entry and filing. Your efforts increase our staff’s capacity to support our Team Members in reaching their goals.

Weekly Success Meeting - Witness Downtown Streets Team’s Weekly Success Meetings as we celebrate our team’s success, share resources, and welcome new members to the team. Afterwards, hear our Team Member’s stories as you break bread together. Your support is needed setting up and breaking down the meeting space.
