Dear Faculty,
Community engagement and service is important now more than ever. Society today is facing incredible challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a re-evaluation of individual civic roles and responsibilities and what it means to be a democracy, and a reckoning regarding the role of race and racism in our country. CSULB is in a unique position to support our local communities and our students in navigating through these times. Service learning provides a means for us to help address these and other significant issues in ways that deepen students’ understanding of course content and of their own personal, professional, and civic development.
A small cohort of faculty will be selected to participate in the upcoming Curriculum Development Design Series. Curriculum development funds will be made available to faculty who (1) complete a successful redesign of their course syllabus* and (2) teach the service learning course in the upcoming academic year (with the intention to teach the service learning course in future semesters).
*A successfully redesigned course syllabus includes all characteristics/criteria of a service learning course as established in the CSULB Policy on Service Learning and has been certified by the Center for Community Engagement as meeting these criteria.
To be considered applicants should:
Please provide a letter from your department chair indicating your chair's support of the proposed course redesign and of you teaching the course in the upcoming academic year.
