Communications InternAt — Harbor Community Benefit Foundation (HCBF)
Opportunity is ideal for student interested in gaining experience at a non-profit and learning about environmental exposures, public health, mitigation strategies, and other issues related to impacts on near-port communities. Student should have strong writing and communication skills, be innovative and a fast learner. Under the guidance of the Program Director, student will participate in activities to implement HCBF’s Communications Plan: - Assist with researching articles, local community initiatives, and other concepts/issues relevant to port-impacted communities (e.g. environmental hazards, public health, zero emission, safety, climate change, community engagement, etc.) - Communication planning, material development, and dissemination. Student will help translate research and other information to create public resources, including fact sheets, newsletters, web content (e.g. grant stories) for the HCBF Blog. - Support monitoring of HCBF’s social media and develop content to increase engagement. - Assisting with partnership activities, identifying opportunities to expand collaboration and to develop new partnerships.
Opportunity Learning Outcomes:
1. To acquire a working knowledge of the concepts and issues relevant to port-impacted communities (e.g. environmental hazards, public health, zero emission, safety, climate change, community engagement, etc.)
2. To effectively translate scientific research or other resources into materials and other digital content for the public, such as fact sheets, web-content, and grant stories.
3. To develop effective time management, productivity, interpersonal communication skills necessary for job success.
4. To navigate the opportunities and challenges of working at a small non-profit foundation.
Opportunity Training:
Program Director will provide an organizational orientation to the student. For the HCBF blog and newsletter, student will have tutorial on how to use WordPress and Mailchimp. Other training will be provided as needed.
