Opportunity Summary 

The Filipino Migrant Center is conducting education and outreach to low-income Filipino immigrant families, youth, and seniors in West Long Beach. Since 2014, FMC volunteers and community residents have maintained the FMC Walking Club that meets in Hudson Park & Admiral Kidd park in Westside Long Beach every Saturday morning from 8:00 am - 9:30 am. The purpose of the Walking Club is to promote a healthy community through social activities, walking and exercise, healthy living, and outreach and service to the Filipino population & Westside community. The members are primarily Filipino seniors who live and work in the surrounding neighborhood. Now in 2019, the FMC Walking Club has launched a local campaign to pressure the City of Long Beach to finish paving a dangerous sidewalk in Hudson Park to keep pedestrians and families safe. The Filipino Migrant Center (FMC) is looking for Health Education interns to assist with community outreach and the FMC Walking Club activities and campaigns.

Health Intern Duties:

• Participate in the FMC Walking Club on Saturday mornings 8:00 am - 9:30 am in Hudson & Admiral Kidd parks in West Long Beach ( 2125 Santa Fe Ave. Long Beach, CA).

• Commit to at least (20+) internship hours which may include some week nights and weekends. Hours are flexible.

• Assist with Walking Club activities such as setup/cleanup, co-facilitating health workshops and exercise activities and recording attendance/health goals of walkers.

• Assist with Hudson Park Sidewalk Project through community outreach, education, advocacy, and assisting FMC staff in training community members in leadership and organizing.

• Receive an FMC orientation, community organizing training, and mentorship throughout the program.

• Phone bank or follow-up with Walking Club members and other contacts as necessary.

• Communicate weekly with FMC Supervisor to review goals, progress, and planning.

• Conduct other FMC outreach duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

There is very little risk. The health education interns will be helping to conduct health education workshops, writing curriculum, and leading some physical activity in a park for senior citizens such as group stretching, line- dancing, and walking. The health intern needs to be okay/have capacity for physical activity and exercise but nothing strenuous. The most strenuous activity may be helping seniors carry 10-20 lbs box of food supplies from their car to a park bench.
