CENTER FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT 

SERVICE LEARNING INSTRUCTIONALLY RELATED ACTIVITIES (IRA) PROGRAM

Dear Faculty,

Each semester the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) offers student and faculty reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses associated with CCE-recognized service learning/community-based course activities. 

Criteria for Receiving Funds

  1. Course is a CCE-recognized service learning class that follows best practices for service learning and is being taught during the current term.
  2. Related activities are clearly connected to well-defined course learning objectives and cannot be completed without out-of-pocket expenses.
  3. Course and community partners must be registered in the CCE’s S4 @ The Beach online database.
  4. Students must register for their placement sites and log their service-learning hours using the S4 @ The Beach Student Time Log.

Allowable expenses:

  • Consumable supplies and materials (e.g., art supplies for an art workshop, soil and seeds for a community garden, grade-appropriate workbooks for academic tutoring, binders and paper for training curriculum)
  • Printing/copying costs (e.g., materials for a training workshop)
  • Rental costs (e.g., rental of hand tools—rakes, brooms, trowels—for a gardening project; audio-visual equipment for a videotaping project)

Unallowable expenses*:

  • Food or Drinks used for hospitality or refreshments
  • Equipment/Furniture
  • Gifts/Clothing
  • Travel/Transportation
  • Salaries/Wages
  • Tuition/Fees
  • Capital Outlay

* Exceptions to unallowable expenses may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the CCE Service Learning Reimbursement Program committee.
