Opportunity Summary 

Fall 2021: HM 370 Service Learning Opportunity

  1. Grow organic food at home and donate it to a local food bank with simple recipes on how to cook the donated food.  
    • Please identify a food bank in your area and confirm that will be able to receive the donation before you begin your garden.   
    • Start a small garden at home so you learn how to grow organic clean produce. 
    • Develop simple recipes providing ideas of how to use the food and get it approved by the professor before giving to the foodbank
    • Keep some of the food for you and your family and donate the rest to a local food bank.   
  2. Use the falling fruit link  (http://fallingfruit.org) to harvest food around your area and donate it to a local food bank 
  3. Introduce your “neighborhood” to the AskYourNeighbor Project: 
    • Identify neighbors who have food growing on their property 
    • Contact them to see if they are practicing organic methods. If yes, ask if they have extra food that they would like to donate to the project 
    • Introduce them to the AskYourNeighbor Project  http://www.aynproject.org/ 
Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned how to grow sustainable food, awareness of the lack of access to fresh nutrient dense food for the food insecure and possible ways to increase access to nutrient dense affordable food.

Opportunity Training 

Verbal and/or written instructions as well as ongoing consultation during the process. Professor will review recipes developed to assure they meet the needs of the market being served
