Opportunity Summary 

Students supervise and engage patients of all ages and their family members in developmentally appropriate activities in the hospital playroom setting. Students provide comfort items to children and families at their bedside. Students assist the Child Life team with various needs such as toy sanitation, patient birthday/morale celebrations, distributing donations to families, and assisting patients with engaging in our closed circuit TV programming.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will learn about the healthcare environment, about the field of Child Life, and about professional skills needed to function in a healthcare environment. Students will practice assessment skills, interpersonal interaction skills, and strengthen skills associated with supervising and engaging children, particularly children and families under stress.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive an initial training/orientation, and then will receive ongoing training/feedback throughout their hours.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students need to be able to walk freely and sometimes long distances, as well as safely lift young patients and play materials
