DAYSLB connects interns with Long Beach youth to build relationships, strengthen communities, and gain meaningful hands-on experience.
The DAYS Long Beach (DAYSLB) internship is a hands-on, community-based learning opportunity that allows interns to work directly with youth, families, schools, and community partners. A primary component is participation in the Safe Passage Community Ambassador Program (CAP), where interns work alongside DAYSLB staff to provide a positive and supportive adult presence for LBUSD students traveling from school to home. Interns build relationships with students and families, promote pedestrian and community safety, and may also participate in youth enrichment, parent engagement, school events, community outreach, resource distribution, and neighborhood activities.
After completing their assignment with DAYSLB, interns will have gained practical experience in youth engagement, community outreach, relationship-building, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. They will better understand how schools, families, nonprofits, and community partners work together to support young people.
Interns will also learn how to identify community needs, connect families with resources, communicate with diverse populations, and contribute to programs that promote safety, belonging, wellness, and academic success. Most importantly, they will strengthen their confidence, leadership, and professional skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the impact that consistent, relationship-based community service can have on youth and families.
DAYSLB provides interns with hands-on training and professional development opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world community service. Interns work alongside DAYSLB staff, schools, families, and community partners while developing skills in youth engagement, communication, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, community outreach, and relationship-building.
A key component of the internship is participation in the Safe Passage Community Ambassador Program (CAP). Interns receive training and practical experience supporting students as they travel from school to home. Through CAP, interns learn strategies related to street and pedestrian safety, conflict resolution, de-escalation, positive youth engagement, community awareness, and creating safe and welcoming environments. They also learn how consistent, trusted adult presence can strengthen students' sense of safety and belonging.
Interns may also participate in parent engagement activities, school and neighborhood events, community meetings, resource distribution, youth enrichment activities, and outreach efforts. These experiences provide a broader understanding of how schools, nonprofit organizations, families, and community partners work collaboratively to address the needs of young people.
Throughout the internship, students are encouraged to identify their own academic and career interests. DAYSLB works to provide assignments and learning opportunities that strengthen each intern's professional skills while allowing them to make a meaningful contribution to the community.
By the end of their internship, students will have gained practical experience working with diverse communities, increased confidence in communicating with youth and adults, strengthened leadership and interpersonal skills, and developed a greater understanding of community-based approaches to youth development, safety, wellness, and family support.
DAYSLB prioritizes intern safety through clear protocols, training, supervision, and communication. Interns participating in the Safe Passage Community Ambassador Program receive training in pedestrian and street safety, de-escalation, conflict resolution, professional boundaries, and responding to community concerns. Interns work alongside DAYSLB staff or trained team members and are not expected to intervene in unsafe or threatening situations. They are instructed to remain aware of their surroundings, immediately report concerns, follow established emergency procedures, and contact appropriate personnel when necessary. Regular check-ins with DAYSLB staff will provide additional guidance.
