HCA Student InternAt — Harbor UCLA Medical Center
Interning in Hospital Administration at Harbor-UCLA provides bachelor’s level Health Care Administration students the opportunity to experience the real world of health care administration at a busy acute care hospital and Level I Trauma Center. Student interns can observe and actively participate in focused activities related to emergency preparedness; regulatory and accreditation compliance; patient and workforce engagement; and the hospital’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Antiracism (EDIA) Initiative, quality assessment and performance improvement. The hospital’s quality and performance improve activities are guided by the Toyota Production System (TPS)/Lean methodology, and include outcome and process improvement projects designed to improve patient and staff safety, safety/reduce harm, reduce patient and clinical wait times, and reduce waste.
At the conclusion of the internship, the student interns will have learned the organization of the hospital’s management and departmental components, its approach to quality and safety, its multi-pronged communications, the health care industry’s approach to emergency preparedness, and the basics about regulatory and accreditation agencies and cycles. They will have learned about the ongoing, episodic, and emergent types of assignments handled by health care administrators. And this should help them learn whether health care administration suits them.
Health Care Administration student interns will receive in-person and on-line training on a variety of management and health care topics, including:
• TeamSTEPPS ® -- a teamwork system designed for health care professionals to help them provide higher quality, safer patient care and to create and sustain a culture of safety.
• Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) -- an incident management system based on principles of the Incident Command System (ICS), which assists hospitals and healthcare organizations in improving their emergency management planning, response, and recovery capabilities for unplanned and planned events.
• Toyota Production System (TPS)/Lean methodology of continuous quality improvement, which aims to improve the bottom line by creating workspaces that are free from clutter to increase productivity, safety, efficiency, and employee satisfaction.

All workforce members, including student interns, are issued a photo identification badge and are required to wear it at all time while on the hospital campus. Harbor-UCLA has on-site sworn peace officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, contract security guards, weapons screening for non-workforce members at all public entrances. Harbor-UCLA provides training on workplace violence and active shooter situations.
