Opportunity Summary 

Each Fall and Spring we offer semester-long internship placement opportunities at participating local health departments across California. This opportunity is open to community college, undergraduate, and graduate students. Our internship program offers paid experience to gain exposure to public health government service. Interns perform work in various areas including but not limited to communicable disease control, community engagement, and data analysis. Interns are provided professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities through Cal-PPH and hands-on experience through local health department work. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits at a UEI affiliated institution to participate.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Gain exposure to public health government service at a local health department. Gained exposure to one or more of the public health content areas: Biostatistics, Behavioral & Mental Health, Community Engagement & Partnership, Environmental Health Science, Epidemiology, Genomics & Microbiology, Health Policy, Health Program Planning & Evaluation. Gained experience in one or more hard skills such as Analytical skills, Attention to Detail, Clear writing (written communications), Scientific & research mindset, Strategic thinking, and software skills. Gained experience in one or more transferrable skills such as Effective Communication, Strong Social Skills, Cultural Competency, Systems Thinking, Flexibility, Professionalism & self-discipline.

Opportunity Training 

Interns will receive training directly from the local health department in order to perform responsibilities. Interns will receive additional training and professional development opportunities from the Cal-PPH Program. There will be an additional mentoring component through Cal-PPH for those seeking additional support.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Interns will participate in safety trainings during the onboarding process.
