Urban Anthropology Field Project: Long Beach OlympicsAt — Historical Society of Long Beach
Students in Urban Anthropology will partner with the Historical Society of Long Beach (HSLB) to document how the city is preparing for the 2028 Olympics. Through ethnographic research, mapping, photography, interviews, and collaboration with HSLB staff, students will explore how urban spaces, cultural practices, and community identities are shaped by this global event. Their work will contribute to HSLB’s historical collection and support public understanding of Long Beach’s urban history and Olympic legacy.
By participating in this opportunity, students will be able to:
-
Apply urban anthropology methods (ethnographic observation, mapping, interviewing, and photo documentation) to study city spaces, cultural practices, and community events.
-
Analyze how the 2028 Olympics planning impacts communities in Long Beach, including issues of inclusion, representation, and urban change.
-
Collaborate with the Historical Society of Long Beach to document local history and contribute to a publicly accessible collection.
-
Reflect on their role as engaged scholars by connecting classroom theory with real-world community experiences.
-
Strengthen skills in research, writing, teamwork, and public presentation through the development of ethnographic projects and contributions to HSLB archives.
All training will be hands-on under close supervision by the Archivist, who will demonstrate each task and then supervise the student until they are competent at the task.
