As a volunteer at HBWC, you will have the opportunity to participate in restoration activities, educational programs, working in our native plant nursery, ecological monitoring, community outreach and social media or any combination of these tasks. Students interested in restoration activities can assist with trash collection, non-native plant monitoring and removal, planting native marsh and dune plants, and assisting with ongoing planning and adaptive management of our current restoration projects. For those interested in education and outreach, we have many opportunities to assist with tours of our Interpretive Center, tabling at community events, guiding hands-on educational activities and developing content for our website and social media. Our volunteer program is flexible and we work to match our volunteers with opportunities that align with their interests as much as possible.
Although much of our work is in-person and the restoration work is physical, we also need help with tasks that can be done on-site indoors or even remote. Examples include administrative tasks, processing data, developing outreach and social media content, etc. We are flexible and can work with the abilities of our volunteers.
Students will learn a wide range of skills including restoration techniques, professional skills, horticulture techniques for native plants, team building, community outreach, plant identification, non-profit business operations, data collection and survey techniques, etc.
Our training is provided on-site and on-the-job. We will work with each student individually to provide training for each activity and project they participate in.
When working on-site, we recommend volunteers wear close-toed shoes, sun protection and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. We encourage volunteers to be conscious about staying hydrated, even on overcast days. Other PPE will be provided when necessary or recommended (e.g. gloves, mud boots, safety glasses, etc.)
