School Program LeaderAt — Habitat Stewardship Project Monterey Bay (HSP) (Formerly RON, Return of the Natives)

Opportunity Summary

Our mission is to bring people closer to nature and nature closer to people. This role is for students interested in habitat restoration and environmental education for students K-12. This is an excellent role for people pursuing education and who enjoy working with kids.

Being a School Field Trip Leader will take students to beautiful places, including Fort Ord National Monument and beaches in the Monterey Peninsula. They will learn about native plants and teach kids about their importance and how to plant them correctly, depending on the site we are working on. Some days students will work with 4th graders at local school gardens, teaching them about seeds and native plants.

  • Learn about our education programs and assist by supporting the HSP team during class presentations, educational environmental activities and field trips.

  • Learn basic garden maintenance and growing techniques.

  • Assist with teaching 4th graders how to care for their school gardens and teach 6th graders about the scientific method.

Duties include:

  • assisting in leading groups of 8-12 kids in educational activities outdoors and in classroom settings,

Opportunity Training

Students will receive program-specific training focusing on classroom management, activity exposure, and practice so they can assist in leading these stations on classroom visit days and/or field trip days.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

This placement requires working with hazardous materials, heavy equipment, construction equipment, heights, or heavy machinery. Specifically, service learners will carry shovels and heavy plants up steep, uneven terrain with intense sun/weather exposure.

Often, another supervisor or I oversee 80+ people, so service learners may be on their own regarding guidance, which shouldn't be a problem with proper training and practice.

We take photos/videos of our programs for social media and grant reporting. Please let us know if you're not comfortable with that.
