VITA Tax Preparer RoleAt — United Way of the Monterey County (UWMC)
We are partnering with the service-learning department at CSUMB to offer students the opportunity to become Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparers. This role is a critical part of providing free tax services to low- and moderate-income individuals in our community.
Training and Time Commitment:
- 36 hours of training is required to prepare volunteers for the role, covering tax law, software usage, and IRS certification.
- Nov. 2 - Dec. 14, 2024
- No training on Nov. 30 due to Thanksgiving weekend
- In addition to training, 25 hours of service must be completed during the tax season (Feb - Apr 2025)
- Important: The 25 service hours are a required part of fulfilling the service-learning obligation. Both training and service hours must be completed before we can sign off on any service-learning requirement.
Must pass the tax preparer exam in order to serve as tax preparer. Will serve as an intake specialist during tax season if certification is not achieved.

24 service learner spots
Saturday trainings given to students which will help them gather the knowledge and skills needed to perform tax preparation for the community.
United Way Monterey County provides three staff members to support the students alongside with volunteer lead people whom have participated with the tax program for 6+ years.
SUPERVISION: Students may be required to work at night (after 6pm).
Student may occasionally be placed at a site that operates past 6pm but not past 9pm.
