Opportunity Training

Students will participate in an orientation and training where they will get an introduction to the Bird School Project and the MB Festival of Birds. We will openly discuss students' skills and strengths and what they wish to accomplish during the service learning semester. Service learning students will also have the opportunity to shadow the community programs manager during a community event. This will help students better understand how they can facilitate an activity at a tabling event, how to lead a community nature walk, and how to directly engage with the community while representing The Bird School Project. The best way to learn is by doing. Once service learning students have had an opportunity to participate in a community event, they will have the opportunity to reflect on what went well and what are areas to grow. Then we will re-train and be ready for the next event.

Students will be under the supervision of the student and community programs manager. Once we've established orientation and training, we will work together to develop ideas for outreach in community events or social media. Students will then be able to work asynchronously with weekly team check-ins to see where they've progressed. We will provide service learners with the necessary resources and supervision but also offer them some independence, allowing them to solve minor challenges that may arise on their own. We will also assist service learners in developing human relations skills, decision-making abilities, and other crucial skills.
