Big Sur Land Trust iNaturalist Hiking TeamAt — Big Sur Land Trust (BSLT)

Opportunity Summary 

Students serving on Big Sur Land Trust’s iNaturalist hiking team will: 

  • Collect iNaturalist observations while buddy-hiking on Big Sur Land Trust preserves. Each iNaturalist hiking team member will be expected to collect a minimum of 100 observations

  • Volunteer as part of Big Sur Land Trust’s ‘Green Team’, helping to sweep the Big Sur International Marathon course on Sunday, April 27, 2025

Students must be available SATURDAYS 8AM-4PM to be considered for this opportunity, unless prior approval of an alternative schedule is received. 

Students must be available for a full day of volunteering in support of the Big Sur International Marathon on Sunday, April 27, 2025. 

In addition, service learners will be required to submit: 

  • Pre-service survey 

  • Post-service survey 

  • Reflection essay with photo 

This opportunity is highly independent and is the right fit for service learners who are motivated, organized self-starters, with strong outdoor/hiking skills and an interest in contributing to a local and global biodiversity dataset while spending time in nature.  

Observations collected by past service learners can be viewed in the Big Sur Land Trust service learners iNaturalist project, which contributes to the larger Big Sur Land Trust iNaturalist project

Requirements: 

  • Driver's License 

  • Must be 18 or older 

  • Must have own transportation to Big Sur Land Trust's preserves 

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive a general orientation to Big Sur Land Trust, which will review Big Sur Land Trust’s mission, vision, history, organizational structure, self-guided hiking system, preserves, major projects, and more. iNaturalist service learners will be trained on the use of the iNaturalist app. Site supervisor Jenny Jacox will be available throughout the semester to provide 1-1 support.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students will access Big Sur Land Trust preserves through our hike request system, which requires them to sign a liability waiver.
