Tobacco Prevention and Advocacy InternshipAt — Breathe California

Opportunity Summary 

This is a unique opportunity to join our local nonprofit health agency as we fight lung disease in all its forms and work with our communities to protect lung health. As part of Breathe California of the Bay Area’s efforts to protect communities from the harmful effects of tobacco, we are looking for an anti-tobacco health education intern to assist the us in engaging in various advocacy efforts to influence local tobacco control attitudes and policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Project is a hybrid workspace, project local within the local community

· Assist the Anti-Tobacco Education and Advocacy program team in developing new advocacy strategies

· Outreach to community and institutional stakeholders, schools, local youth-serving agencies, and community events to increase awareness and garner support

· Conduct and gather opinion surveys regarding tobacco control

· Become informed about the latest research regarding tobacco control including flavored tobacco products and marijuana

· Provide presentations and testimony (with support) to community partners, stakeholders and policy makers in order to gain support and increase awareness

· Create social media material to inform and gain support

· Conduct peer/student, community and youth trainings regarding policy advocacy

Qualifications: · Must be non-tobacco user · Enthusiastic about public health and tobacco control policy · Interest in experiencing community outreach and advocacy · Strong interpersonal skills · Excellent verbal and written communication skills · Comfortable working with diverse populations · Bilingual, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, a plus but not required

Opportunity Training 

We provide both individual and team orientation sessions with the program manager and with the entire staff and all interns and service-learners each semester. Intern/program manager check-in meetings are held no less than every other week and often are held weekly. Specific training and rehearsal for public speaking events such as testimony for city council meetings or stakeholder meetings with local business eatery owners are held for these activities. When public opinion surveys will be collected, there is a specific training for that activity.
