Basic Needs at CSUMB is an on campus program that supports CSUMB students in meeting their basic food, housing, and wellness needs.
Thank you for your interest in working with Basic Needs for your Service Learning placement. We at Basic Needs and Service Learning are looking to recruit 15 service learning students to serve your fellow Otters by staffing our Basic Needs Hub, Unloading from the Safeway and Trader Joe’s, Farmer's Market, providing exceptional customer service. This Service Learning position will allow you the opportunity to get to know students while giving back to the student population and utilizes both emotional and physical labor.
Service Learners will be able to select from the following shifts (the number in parentheses is the amount of shifts available. For ex: 2 SLs can work 9a.m. - 1p.m. on Monday):
- Mondays:
- 8:30a.m. - 11:30a.m. (1)
- 10a.m. - 1p.m. (1)
- 11:30a.m. - 2:30p.m. (1)
- 4 - 6:30p.m. (1)
- Tuesdays:
- 8:30a.m. - 11:30a.m. (1)
- 11:30am - 2p.m. (1)
- 2:30 - 5:30p.m. (1)
- Wednesdays:
- 8:30 - 11:30am (1)
- 10a.m. - 1:30p.m. (1)
- 11a.m - 2p.m. (1)
- Thursdays:
- 8:30 - 11:30am (1)
- 11:30a.m. - 2:30p.m. (1)
- 2:30pm - 6:00pm (1)
- Fridays:
- 8:30 - 11:30a.m. (1)
- 1:15 -4:15p.m. (1)
Shifts outside of these timeframes will not be accommodated.
Please see “Application Process” below in order to be considered for a Service Learning position at the Basic Needs Hub. Student who do not follow the “Application Process” as outlined below will not be considered for a Service Learning position at the Hub.
Please note: We may be ablet to accommodate more Service Learners later in the semester, as most students will complete their Service Learning over the course of 8 weeks.
Duties:
Basic Needs Hub and Thrift Corner: Service Learners will stock shelves, break down cardboard boxes, take out trash and recycling, unload donations or grocery hauls, sort and hang clothing, general cleaning, and check students in at the Hub.
Unloading from Food Recovery Donations and restocking: Service Learners will move large quantities of boxes from vehicles in to carts and hand trucks, unload the carts and hand trucks, restock shelves, reorganize, break down cardboard boxes, take out trash and recycling. If you are DUB certified, you would also have the opportunity to assist us at the Food Bank by using your vehicle to transport food from Salinas to campus.
Farmer's Market: Service Learners will be assisting with EBT exchange, set up and tear down of the Farmer’s Market at the Basic Needs table.
- This role is limited to Thursdays in APRIL from 1-6p.m.
CSUMB Parenting Student Scholars Program: Service Learners will assist with the Parting Student Scholars mixers (one Friday a month) and low level case management. This is a great opportunity for psychology students, or students planning to move into a MSW grad program.
Many of our processes require standing for up to 4 hours, or lifting/pushing up to 50lbs (23kg). This does not determine whether or not you will be chosen, just for planning purposes!

You will receive all of your required training from our Student Assistants on your first shift at the Hub. Please be prepared with close toed shoes and clothing you can walk, lift, bend, and sit in and clothing you are not afraid to get dirty.
