Opportunity Summary 

Emergency Department Volunteers work closely with Emergency Department, Guest Services, and Patient Experience staff to enhance the patient experience in the Emergency Department by providing information and assistance to patients and their visitors and non-medical assistance for staff. Tasks include greeting, escorting, and wheelchair transport as needed as well as rounding to assist with non-medical requests.

Opportunity Training 

Orientation is provided to all volunteers via self-study or classroom presentation then they attend training specific to their role and responsibilities, followed by at least one shift shadowing an experienced volunteer before working independently.

During most shifts, there are two volunteer scheduled to support each other and our office and Concierge staff are available to assist with questions or concerns as they arise.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Safety and privacy considerations will be covered in orientation and training.

Students may be working unsupervised with minor or other vulnerable populations. Students may be working with individuals who pose an elevated risk of harm or injury to them. Emergency Department can be a stressful environment due to the presence of sick and injured individuals and their worried visitors.

Students may be required to work at night (after 6pm). Or, students may be supervised less than 50% of the time or the supervisor will be overseeing more than 8 people. Staff, including care providers and Security will be present to support students at all times with Volunteer Services staff available as needed, but not on site at all times.
