Boronda Adobe Conservation Project - Capital Campaign 2025 - MCHS - SUMMER 2025At — Monterey County Historical Society (MCHS)
Join the community of volunteers and members of the Monterey County Historical Society Board of Directors in launching a Capital Campaign to raise $200,000 to see through the conservation and replacement of the now seriously dilapidated shingled roofs of both the Boronda Adobe, built in 1844-48, and the Lagunita Schoolhouse of 1897. The Adobe clay structure built by the early Californio family of Jose Eusebio Boronda under a Mexican land grant is seriously imperiled. Its shingled roof was found to have sustained some 60+ golf ball-sized holes, and very nearly did not survive the storms of this past year.
We are on a mission to raise funds by coordinating a letter-writing campaign, preparing and printing fundraising materials, and coordinating outreach to potential donors while seeking community support for this momentous effort. Ultimately, we require a business plan aligned with promotional outreach. Join us today!

Under the guidance of James Perry, MCHS Executive Director, and Professor Emeritus and MCHS Board President, Dr. Ruben Mendoza, students will be offered orientation to the Boronda Adobe History Center's invaluable historical resources and conservation needs. They will be afforded access to our membership database and contacts and instructed on potential approaches to soliciting funds from area organizations. Grantwriting will also be addressed as an additional avenue for meeting our objectives.
Opportunity Supervision:
Both the MCHS Executive Director and Board President will be available on an ongoing basis. They will coordinate student efforts on the Capital Campaign with our MCHS Fundraising Committee. Though we have limited staffing, in the way of a bookkeeper, we also have access to a host of volunteers and a financial advisor.
Professor Mendoza is fully committed to meeting with students at CSUMB or on-site at the Boronda Adobe History Center located at 333 Boronda Road, Salinas, CA 93907.
