Server - The Steinbeck HouseAt — The Steinbeck House
JR volunteers are student-based volunteers who take on many of the same responsibilities as regular volunteers, with the exception of serving alcoholic beverages. By participating, JR Servers can earn hours toward their school community service requirements, and they may also qualify for letters of recommendation from the Valley Guild in recognition of their service. Volunteer opportunities include working as servers, assisting in the kitchen, helping with special events, and supporting the gift shop.

As servers, students will take guest orders, deliver them to the kitchen, serve meals, and check in to ensure visitors are enjoying their dining experience. They will also learn to prepare and present checks, complete side cleaning duties, and reset tables for the next service. This hands-on role helps students build teamwork and interpersonal skills while preserving a historic landmark for the community and visitors worldwide.
Once the volunteer coordinator has met with the student to ensure this opportunity is a good fit for them, the student will then shadow one of the veteran servers for at least two to three days. They will be trained on how to take orders, clear plates, speak to guests, clean, and serve meals to the guests. They will also be trained in how to learn the POS system for inputting orders and printing checks.
Opportunity Supervision
There are always at least two to three additional servers, one cashier, and one manager on a shift. These additional volunteers will support the students by being readily available to answer any questions they may have or any help they may need. The volunteer coordinator will also check in with the students to ensure they are on track for hours and that they are gaining valuable skills in this opportunity. Managers and trainers will consistently check in with the students. We are one big family here, no matter how short or long you volunteer with us.
Students are required to wear closed-toed shoes when working in a restaurant environment. While accidents happen and things may break, it’s important to be mindful of the cleanup process, especially when dealing with glass.

Once she has been contacted, Amy will schedule a meeting to provide more details of the opportunity and get to know the students. From here, students will need to sign a waiver and then will be scheduled for training.
