Beginner Birding Field Trip Leader - Monterey Audubon SocietyAt — Monterey Audubon Society (MAS)

Opportunity Summary

Looking to complete your CSUMB service learning hours while spending time outdoors and building leadership and communication skills? Monterey Audubon Society is seeking students to help lead Beginner Birding field trips throughout the semester.

2 Service Learner Spots

This role is ideal for students interested in biology, environmental studies, education, recreation, or science communication. You’ll help welcome community members to birding, teach basic identification skills, and model respectful, inclusive outdoor practices. Field trips occur on a recurring schedule, with opportunities to add additional trips based on your availability. Each trip requires a three-hour time commitment.

You’ll gain hands-on experience in environmental education, public engagement, and conservation outreach—while connecting people to nature in a meaningful, accessible way.

Opportunity Training

We will provide an overview of program priorities and expectations, review the basics of bird identification, and share trusted resources to support learning as needed. The ideal candidate will already have basic bird ID skills and comfort birding in the field, as training is meant to supplement—not replace—existing knowledge. Ongoing guidance and feedback will be provided as students gain experience leading trips.

Opportunity Supervision

Support includes the option of a co-lead for the first one or two outings, if needed. After that, students are expected to lead field trips independently. Email reminders will be sent in advance of each trip; however, students are responsible for their own transportation and for arriving at the field trip location on time.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Students are responsible for getting themselves to field trip locations and for communicating clearly in advance if any issues arise. Monterey Audubon Society is a nonprofit, and these outings are a key way we engage with new supporters and the community. Binoculars and spotting scopes are available for use if you don’t have your own. Reliability, clear communication, and enthusiasm for connecting people with birds and nature are essential for a positive experience.
