Community Literacy Leader Intern - Read to Me ProjectAt — Read to Me Project
Read to Me Project’s mission is to promote literacy equity by increasing access to high-quality reading experiences for children and families in resource constrained communities. The organization designs and implements community-centered programs that strengthen early literacy skills, foster family engagement, and support educational achievement through culturally responsive resources, volunteer engagement, and school partnerships.
College students will support literacy development by working directly with children in small-group and one-on-one settings. Participants will assist with:
- reading activities,
- implementing strategies aligned with the 9 Best Ways literacy framework, and
- providing academic support to students who need additional literacy assistance.
This opportunity offers hands-on experience in education, youth development, and community engagement while contributing to equitable learning outcomes.
Site locations include:
- Del Rey Woods Elementary, Seaside
- Creekside Elementary, Salinas

Requirements:
- Background Check (e.g. fingerprinting/livescan, driving record)
- Driver's License
- Must be 18 or older
- TB Test
- Vaccinations
- Bilingual Desired
Students will be introduced to organizational policies, site expectations, child safety procedures, and professional standards. Training will include instruction on the 9 Best Ways literacy framework, effective reading support strategies, age-appropriate engagement techniques, and guidelines for working with diverse student populations.
Opportunity Supervision
Students will be assigned a site supervisor who will provide continuous oversight through regular check-ins, on-site guidance, and performance feedback. Supervision will include observation during program activities, coaching to strengthen instructional practices, and ongoing communication to address challenges and support professional growth.
