Art Camp Leader, Art Outreach Coordinator - First Night MontereyAt — First Night Monterey

Students will receive orientation and hands-on training from First Night Monterey staff and teaching artists before and during their service learning placement. Training will include:

• An overview of First Night Monterey’s mission, programs, and community arts goals
• Introduction to the Art Camp schedule, age groups, classroom expectations, and daily responsibilities
• Guidance on working with young artists in a positive, encouraging, and age-appropriate way
• Basic safety procedures, including supervision, check-in/check-out awareness, and maintaining a safe art-making environment
• Training on art materials, project setup, cleanup, and how to assist students with painting, drawing, mixed media, and mural activities
• Instruction on the Unity Hands Kindness Project, including the purpose of the project, how to guide participants in creating handprints and kindness messages, and how the movable murals will be assembled
• Support in encouraging teamwork, inclusion, kindness, and respect among participants
• Ongoing supervision, feedback, and mentoring from FNM staff and lead artists throughout the program

Students will not be expected to lead independently at first. They will begin by assisting staff and teaching artists, then may take on more responsibility as they become comfortable with the projects and participants.

Opportunity Supervision

Students will receive ongoing support and supervision from First Night Monterey staff, teaching artists, and the program coordinator throughout their service learning placement.

Support will include regular check-ins before, during, and after program activities to review expectations, answer questions, and address any concerns. Students will be given clear daily responsibilities, guidance on working with youth, and help with setting up, leading, and cleaning up art projects.

During Art Camp and Unity Hands Kindness Project activities, students will work under the supervision of experienced FNM staff or lead artists. They will not be left alone to supervise children or manage activities without staff support. FNM staff will model positive youth engagement, inclusive teaching practices, safety procedures, and respectful communication.

Students will also receive ongoing feedback and mentoring as they gain confidence. If challenges arise, staff will be available to help problem-solve, adjust responsibilities, and ensure that students feel supported and successful in their service learning experience.
