The Birth Network of Monterey County invites passionate service learners to make a meaningful difference while gaining hands on experience. Work alongside community leaders, healthcare professionals, and volunteers dedicated to improving maternal and family health. Apply classroom knowledge while building skills and outreach, event planning, nonprofit operations, advocacy, public health, communications, and volunteer engagement.
Students from nursing, public health, social work, psychology, education, communications, and related fields are encouraged to apply. Your work will support programs that connect families with resources, promote healthy pregnancies, strengthen partnerships, and reduce barriers to care.
Opportunities may include:
- assisting with events
- supporting outreach efforts
- developing resources
- participating in program planning and evaluation.
You also gain insight into nonprofit leadership in maternal – child health advocacy, or grant writing.
Service learners are expected to:
- be available on the first Tuesday of the month at 4:30 PM for the Birth Network of Monterey County board meeting.
- share what they are working on.

Requirements:
- Computer Literacy
- Driver's License
- Must be 18 or older
Service learners will receive a structured orientation and ongoing mentorship to ensure they feel confident and prepared in their roles. Training will include an introduction to the Birth Network of Monterey County's mission, programs, community partnerships, and the populations we serve. Students will receive instruction on professional communication, confidentiality and privacy expectations, cultural humility, trauma informed and family centered approaches, and appropriate boundaries when interacting with community members. Depending on their assigned projects, students may also be trained in the event coordination, community outreach, volunteer engagement, resource navigation, social media and communications, data collection, and basic program evaluation.
Opportunity Supervision
Throughout their placement, students will work under the guidance of experienced board members and community partners, receive regular check ins and feedback, and have opportunities to ask questions, reflect on their experiences, and build professional skills. Additional training may be provided as new projects arise to ensure students have the knowledge and support needed to successfully complete their service learning experience.
