VolunteerAt — Avenues Supported Living Services, Inc
Students will shadow a person we support in their daily life (attending work or volunteer work, going to the gym, shopping, cooking, etc.). They will be supervise and trained by our paid employees. Students have the unique opportunity to engage with people in their community and this often means volunteering both for us and with us at another local non-profit that the person volunteers at. Our hope is that our student volunteers realize that the people we support are similar to themselves and take this knowledge with them to whatever career they choose.
Students will learn or be reminded that people with disabilities are more like them than they are different from them. They will learn about various forms of communication. They will be able to see competencies in all people and see the value of leading productive and meaningful lives. They will understand the concepts of relationships, rights and responsibilities in relation to the people we support.
Individual training from the support staff regarding the person they are supporting. General training opportunities and literature.
Students may be asked to support people in a wide range of areas including gyms, pools, work sites, community locations, etc. They will need to be able to safely negotiate these locations and may need to bring a different set of clothes to change into during their day (gym clothes, etc.)
Students can choose to follow the staff and person being supported in their personal vehicle or ride along in the staff vehicle to various locations.
