Opportunity Summary 

The Community Engagement & Media Intern with Voces Unidas en Pacoima will support our mission of inspiring civic participation and sustainable change in the San Fernando Valley. Interns will assist in planning and coordinating community events, workshops, and cultural gatherings that uplift local businesses, artists, and grassroots causes. They will help manage outreach efforts, including social media, email communications, and relationship-building with community partners. Interns will also contribute to our radio programs, Voces Unidas and Las Comadres, by supporting production, researching topics, and amplifying local voices through storytelling. This role provides hands-on experience in grassroots organizing, media production, and nonprofit event coordination. Interns will gain valuable skills in community engagement, communications, and project management while directly contributing to initiatives that strengthen resilience and expand access to resources for underserved communities. It’s an opportunity to grow as a changemaker while working alongside passionate organizers and creatives.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Opportunity Training 

Orientation & Mission Training – grounding in our values, history, and approach to civic engagement and sustainable community change. Community Organizing & Outreach – hands-on training in outreach strategies, coalition building, and engaging diverse community members. Event Planning & Coordination – step-by-step guidance on organizing workshops, cultural gatherings, and advocacy events. Media & Radio Production – exposure to planning, recording, and producing community radio segments (Voces Unidas and Las Comadres). Communications & Digital Media – training in social media strategy, storytelling, and content creation to amplify community voices. Leadership & Professional Development – mentorship from co-founders and collaborators to build confidence in project management, public speaking, and advocacy.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Interns will receive guidance to ensure a safe and supportive experience throughout their time with Voces Unidas en Pacoima. This includes training on event and venue safety, proper use of audio and visual equipment, and health practices such as staying hydrated and taking breaks. Interns will also be coached on respectful community interaction and navigating sensitive conversations, with clear instructions for emergency procedures and immediate access to supervisors or first responders when needed. Safety and well-being are prioritized in every activity, event, and workshop.
