Teaching InternAt — California Virtual Academy

• Observe veteran teachers and take notes on effective teaching practices, classroom management, differentiation, and how veteran teachers use students’ prior knowledge, background, and interests in their lessons in order to engage students in learning. • Assess student work and data in order to measure student understanding. Learn how to use this data to determine learning goals and to plan, differentiate, and modify instruction as needed. • Assist students individually or in small groups in order to enhance student understanding of the subject matter or targeted skill. • Read, analyze, and learn how to apply academic content standards and curriculum frameworks including California State Content Standards, Common Core Standards, and the C3 Framework. Understand how to apply these standards to lessons while also making subject matter accessible to all students. • Engage in professional pedagogy reading (as recommended by the mentor teacher) relating to classroom management, effective teaching practices, critical thinking, etc. • Research, develop, and/or implement an activity or teach a lesson under the guidance of the mentor teacher. • Complete specific day-to-day tasks in order to better understand the responsibilities of the profession. • Attend department or faculty meetings.
