Opportunity Summary 

The student will provide direct and administrative support to the school counseling office. They would conduct individual check-ins with up to three students (“kiddos”) to provide support and encouragement. They will also respond to walk-ins to the counseling office when students are experiencing moments of distress. Additionally, they will be coaching and guiding students through effective problem-solving strategies and coping techniques.

Maintain a calm, supportive, and student-centered environment. Assist with administrative tasks, including the encoding, organization, and secure storage of confidential documents such as counseling consent forms.

Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and documentation.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

As a counseling intern, the student learns how to support the social, emotional, and academic development of students through individual and group counseling, active listening, and effective communication skills. The internship provides experience in building professional relationships, maintaining confidentiality, observing ethical practices, and collaborating with teachers, families, and school staff. Counseling interns also learn how to identify student needs, assist with conflict resolution, develop intervention strategies, and promote a positive and supportive school environment while gaining practical experience under professional supervision.

Opportunity Training 

On-the-job training for counseling interns provides hands-on experience in applying counseling theories and techniques in real school or clinical settings under professional supervision. Interns learn how to conduct individual and group counseling sessions, observe student behavior, maintain accurate documentation, and follow ethical and confidentiality standards. Through daily interaction with students, staff, and families, counseling interns develop communication, problem-solving, and crisis intervention skills while gaining practical knowledge of school policies, student support services, and professional responsibilities essential for a future career in counseling.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

School staff are responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment by following school safety procedures, reporting incidents, supervising students appropriately, and participating in emergency training. Employees should know evacuation routes, practice fire and electrical safety, maintain clean walkways to prevent slips and falls, and use safe lifting techniques when handling equipment or supplies. Staff must also follow hygiene and chemical safety guidelines, and support student wellbeing through child protection procedures. Prompt reporting of accidents, unsafe conditions, or concerns helps ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors.
