Opportunity Summary

Adult Correctional Mental Health provides treatment for inmates at the Main Jail in downtown Sacramento and the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center in Elk Grove. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, licensed and unlicensed psychologists, licensed social workers, master’s level social workers, psychiatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed vocational nurses. We have MSW Intern Opportunities in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Jail Based Competency Treatment Program(JBCT). All of our MSW II students from the last two years have moved quickly into career positions after completing their MSW. IOP Provides care to inmate-patients diagnosed with serious mental illness who would benefit from the structure of a therapeutic environment that is less restrictive than inpatient settings. JBCT is for inmate-patients found incompetent to stand trial (1370) who must undergo competency restoration treatment prior to moving forward in their legal proceedings.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Students will be part of an interdisciplinary team providing care to incarcerated individuals. Students will observe, cofacilitate and then go on to individually perform a number of clinical duties. Students will have a caseload by the end of their internship. Clinical activities include but are not limited to: Mental Health Assessments, individual treatment, group treatment, multidisciplinary treatment teams, behavior plans and discharge planning. For the last two years all MSW II students have moved into career positions with the department shortly after graduation.

Opportunity Training

Students participate in out onboarding which involves structured training, supervision and collaboration. Students will be provided structured training in treatment planning, suicide risk assessment, effective communication and other competencies. Students will learn talks by shadowing the task, performing the task with an MSW or LCSW (cofacilitation) and then moving on to providing services independently. MSW, LCSW and LCSW supervisors are always available for consultation.
