Basic Needs & Mental Health MSW InternAt — Sierra College - Behavioral Intervention CARE Team

Opportunity Summary 

Support community college students who are experiencing food and housing insecurities while promoting equity, mental health, financial wellness, and academic achievement. This includes trauma-informed crisis intervention and case management to assess needs, develop service plans, provide resources and referrals, and provide emotional support and advocacy. Student interns will also have the opportunity to practice solution-focused personal counseling and motivational interviewing techniques.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Fundamentals of case management and crisis intervention, principles of trauma-informed care, basic needs theory and support, solution-focused counseling and motivational interviewing skills, de-escalation techniques, equity practices in higher education, working with disproportionately impacted students, service navigation, documentation, collaboration with internal and external entities.

Opportunity Training 

Training will include program background and procedures, techniques for crisis intervention and de-escalation, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, case notes and documentation, service provision in a higher education setting, and coordinating resources, referrals, and collaboration.
