Opportunity Summary 

Intern Position Description

Under the direction of the site supervisor and FASD Capacity Coordinators, the Non-Profit Capacity Building Intern will be placed at one of Feeding America San Diego’s partner agencies to whom he/she will provide support in CalFresh outreach/application assistance, nutrition education, and other capacity building activities (i.e. marketing, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, etc.).

The Non-Profit Capacity Building Intern will help to improve CalFresh education and participation within San Diego County by answering client inquiries, assessing clients for eligibility, assisting with applications, and disseminating CalFresh materials. The Non-Profit Capacity Building Intern will keep up-to-date on CalFresh program regulations, barriers, and policies while maintaining regular contact with clients and staff members of the intern’s host partner agency.

The Non-Profit Capacity Intern will conduct nutrition education through giving interactive demonstrations, creating ma terials, and teaching nutrition classes. The Non-Profit Capacity Building Intern will also identify and help meet the needs of their site to increase the capacity of the host partner agency.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Become fully knowledgeable of the CalFresh Program regulations, eligibility requirements, and application process.
  • Conduct direct service outreach to food-insecure low-income families, individuals, seniors, disabled, and other diverse populations.
  • Assist eligible clients with the CalFresh application and ensure completion.
  • Submit complete applications to our out-stationed eligibility workers on behalf of clients.
  • Serve as liaison between client and county for follow-up and communication.
  • Update tracking systems.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients if obstacles arise that prevent client from accessing CalFresh benefits.
  • Maintain good relationships with our county out-stationed eligibility workers.
  • Prepare and distribute recipe samples and hand out nutrition education materials to clients at partner agency’s distributions.
  • Develop nutrition education materials for distribution at partner agency’s site.
  • Research new techniques to engage clients in nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
  • Teach nutrition education classes to partner agency’s clients.
  • All other duties as assigned by partner agency. Examples include social media support, grant writing, and volunteer recruitment.

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be accurate and detail oriented, possess strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a complex and fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong proficiency in Windows 2010, Excel, Microsoft Word.
  • Bilingual skills highly desired (Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, etc).
