2022-2023 Opportunity Summary

In-School and After School Tutoring/Mentoring is an academic skills development initiative where volunteers help a few struggling learners (or gifted learners) in a safe, nurturing school environment. We welcome community service learning volunteers to engage in a mutually beneficial partnership in the following areas:

In-school Service Learning Opportunities: Grades K-5

  • Mondays-Fridays

  • 1.5 hours+/week

  • Time period: 8:00 AM-2:00 PM

  • In-person preferred

  • Topics include: English Language Development, Reading, Basic Math, Character Formation

After School Service Learning Opportunities

  • Monday - Thursday 

  • Time period:

    • 1:00 - 4:00 PM on Mondays

    • 2:00 - 4:30 PM Tuesdays - Thursdays

  • In-person preferred, with limited virtual after school tutoring Mondays-Thursdays

  • Topics include: English Language Development, Reading, Basic Math, Character Formation

Additional Opportunity: Helping Parents with English Language Development

Community Service Learning Students will join a team of volunteers providing interactive English Language Development (ELD) for parents after school. They will engage in conversational English during a time of snacks and fellowship and also facilitate engagement in reading high interest bilingual books as a family.

Additional Opportunity: Newcomer/English Language Learner Mentor

Advanced Spanish CSUSM Community Service Learning Students/Interns have the opportunity to tutor/mentor one to two newcomers or English learners throughout the semester in English language development and provide academic and social emotional support for their assigned children and families.

Community Service Learning Volunteers have received special honors, awards, and scholarships and were well prepared for employment through their community service learning experience/internships with us.

We provide brief orientation sessions and resources for new volunteers.

Community Service Learning Volunteers may help children and families to use their technology platforms and will be addressing socio-emotional needs with research-based resources.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Community Service Learning Students will:

  • Develop expertise in helping struggling readers with basic reading, English language development and/or basic math using research-based resources.
  • Develop understanding expertise in engaging children in character formation activities that strengthen a child's socio-emotional skills.
Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students will go through Safe Schools training and socio-emotional learning certification.
