Opportunity Summary 

Position Description

Peer Advocacy and Wellness Student (PAWS) Educators is a Student Health & Counseling Services program. PAWS are a group of students trained and committed to providing information and assistance to students and the Cal State San Marcos community regarding pertinent health and wellness related issues. PAWS are trained to help encourage and educate their peers to make healthy lifestyle choices through programs, presentations, workshops, group discussions and campus awareness events. PAWS serve as individual sources of information, provide appropriate referrals, and serve as Student Health Center advocates.

Responsibilities and Activities may include:

  • Facilitating classroom presentations as needed
  • Collects demographic information and evaluation forms from all training and program participants and compiles these statistics appropriately, adjusting presentations based upon participant feedback.
  • Assist with marketing and promoting health-related programs
  • Assist with planning and implementing the Health & Wellness program, ie. Safer Spring Break week, World AIDS Day, Depression Screening, Eating Disorder, Suicide Prevention, Sexual Violence Awareness, Bystander Education, Sexual Health, Healthy Relationship, SEXpert workshops and other health events or activities.
  • Assist with designing promotional materials for programs including flyers, posters, ads….
  • Assist with development of health education videos, editing, interviewing, & broadcasting
  • Assist with maintaining the SHCS Facebook and Contribution to the SHCS blog & Twitter
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Healthy Cougars program, SHCS staff, & HOPE Interns
  • Continually update personal health knowledge

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

Through interning at the SHCS: HOPE & Wellness Center students will learn how to develop and implement health education programs/events and develop skills in leadership, teamwork, and program coordination.

  • Students will enhance communication skills, public speaking and networking.
  • Students will increase knowledge of health & wellness issues through specialized trainings on areas of mental health and sexual health.
  • Students will collaborate with various student organizations and campus departments.
  • Students will develop concrete skills and accomplishments for a stronger resume.

Public Speaking ability and non-verbal communication skills

  • Open-mindedness
  • Relevant experience related to health
  • Knowledge of Social Media Marketing
  • Experience with iMovie
  • Experience with Photoshop, Canva, or making flyers
  • Reliability, responsibility and commitment
  • Preferred majors: Communications, Human Development, Sociology, Psychology or other health-related majors.

Length of position: A semester (a year preferred)
