Opportunity Summary 

Internship Position Description

  • To assist staff with daily husbandry duties such as general feeding and cleaning
  • To assist with staff with medical handling/restraint
  • Enclosure maintenance and enhancements
  • Monitor animals health, behavior
  • Zoo beautification projects
  • Socialization of specific animals
  • Learn general operant conditioning techniques
  • Food prep and nutrition
  • Behavioral enrichment with staff
  • Database entry for inventory and medical records
  • Assisting with on site and offsite education programming and special events

Experience to be gained

conservation biology, conservation education, keeper work

Desired Qualifications

  • Schooling preferable but not required
  • Must be available a minimum of 3 days/week 8 hour days
  • Must have negative tb test
  • Must be in good health and able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must have own housing and transportation

Please note: This site deals with animals (domestic or wild) and may have a higher risk of injury due to bites, scratches, physical injury, contagious diseases, etc. It is encouraged to have a current tetanus vaccine as the activities may entail working with cages or fencing that could result in a puncture or cut. Ensure that you meet with your site supervisor to understand the increased risk in completing your internship/service learning at this site and complete a site safety orientation. In addition, it is highly recommended that you carry health insurance.
