Opportunity Summary 

Intern Position Description

Under the direction of the Nutrition Capacity Coordinator, the Nutrition Intern will lead interactive nutrition education through nutrition demonstrations and presentations to clients at Feeding America San Diego’s partner agencies.

Topics for these demonstrations include measuring portion sizes, how to read Nutrition Facts labels, using spices and seasonings creatively instead of excess salt, sugar quantities in beverages, choosing more whole grain foods, etc. Interns will also offer recipes based on foods clients are receiving so families have ideas of what to prepare in their home kitchens.

The Nutrition Intern will develop nutrition education materials and use our curriculum to facilitate classes on nutrition and healthy lifestyles for our partner agency network, engaging and educating those on the frontlines of hunger on the effects of a healthy lifestyle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Prepare and distribute nutrition information to clients at FASD distributions throughout San Diego County
  • Develop new nutrition education materials
  • Research new techniques to engage partner agencies and clients in nutrition and healthy lifestyles
  • Teach nutrition education classes to partner agencies’ clients and community members

Desired Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • A passion for hunger relief, previous volunteer experience with a non-profit organization preferred
  • Knowledgeable and interest in nutrition education, cooking, and healthy lifestyles
  • Interpersonal skills, able to interact with individuals of various backgrounds, including clients facing hunger
  • Can work both collaboratively and independently
  • Bilingual skills highly desired (Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, etc.)
