Opportunity Summary 

Position Description (e.g. tasks, projects, assignments)The San Diego Humane Society Community Engagement Department, which handles school outreach, onsite youth and adult programs, Pet-Assisted Therapy, mobile adoptions and corporate relations for the organization, is looking for a student currently enrolled at a four-year university who is studying education or a similar field and requires college credit for a semester-long internship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending on their strengths, the intern may be asked to do some or all of the following tasks during their internship:
• Review current education program efforts and effectiveness
• Research new humane education programs/services
• Assist with production, review and editing of class curriculum materials
• Support Education team at various events or classroom activities
• Teach education curriculum to students for onsite and offsite programs
• Assist with other education projects as determined by the Director of Community Engagement or other department staff
• May be required to interact with animals to support efforts of the education and pet therapy programs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Occasionally will be in situations requiring high stamina, such as camp, classrooms or special events. May occasionally be lifting equipment and/or animals of up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position will be a combination of onsite work at our San Diego Humane Society campuses, visits to offsite locations, and other tasks to be done at home. On campus work environment comprises standard office environment with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near and handling animals, automobile travel and occasional visits to offsite locations and special events. May occasionally include work on some evenings and/or weekends. Desired QualificationsEDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE
• Education or related major preferred; intern is expected to have a solid background and understanding of elementary school aged children and state curriculum standards
• Computer literacy in word processing (Microsoft Word) and database (Microsoft Excel) use required.
• Excellent writing skills and interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times
• Strong time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills. Ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines and work efficiently under pressure
• Must be comfortable interacting with a variety of animals; while interaction with animals will be required from time to time, the bulk of the work will be done in an office setting.Number of positions available 1Length of position (Note: A semester is 16 weeks long.) Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

The intern will assist with the development and implementation of coordinated humane education strategies to increase and enhance current program offerings. The intern will also help coordinate community engagement efforts to engage and encourage the community to embrace positive behaviors and attitudes regarding animals.
