CCE is looking for candidates who will be available to work with CCE in preparation for a major conference planned for February titled "Can V2G Alleviate the Duck Curve in California?". See:: https://centerforcommunityenergy.org/feb-2021virtualconverence/ (V2G = vehicle to grid)
Candidates selected will work with Dr. Jose Torre-Bueno (https://centerforcommunityenergy.org/jose-torre-bueno/) to help with research and preparing one or more position papers to be submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission after the conference. The conference will involve experts from the US and Europe. This will give students the opportunity to get to know professionals in the energy production and related technologies, with a focus on modernizing the electric grid here in California and elsewhere. Later in 2021, CCE intends to focus on the emerging hydrogen economy.
Specific tasks and assignments will be determined based on the candidates skills and interests, and CCE's needs. Students will be expected to proactively recommend tasks and responsibilities they can assume.
These are unpaid positions for at least 6 months. After that and based on fundraising and grant application results, this will be reassessed.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Learning objectives will be focused on rethinking energy production and distribution in California and around the world, and modernizing the electric grid, especially here in California.
Candidates will also obtain an in-depth understanding of the CA PUC, the political and economic issues driving decision making at the PUC, and how to address these.
CCE and associate organization, the San Diego Energy District, have a strong track record working with interns and young associates, and helping them prepare for and find jobs in energy or related areas.
Desired Qualifications
Candidates should be engineering majors focused on any of the following: mechanical, chemical, electrical, environmental, computer, or software. Other engineering candidates may also find CCE attractive, and vice versa. Required skills will include:
* A passion for addressing climate change with a focus on decarbonization of the atmosphere
* Research and presentation of results
* Mathematical analysis
* Writing skills and other forms of communication
* Ability to think strategically
Number of positions available 1 to 3
Length of position (Note: A semester is 16 weeks long.) 6 months minimum
Hours per week Will depend on the candidates availability. 10 hours minimum.
