Opportunity Summary

Our chapter maintains a robust schedule of monthly community beach cleanups at beaches all over the county. We provide service learning opportunities for students who'd like to participate in our public cleanups, assist our volunteer site captains with setup/breakdown and hosting the events, and also with tallying up volunteer beach cleanup data and entering it into our online database. The data segment of this opportunity can be done at home and requires a computer and internet access.

Hours breakdown: (7-9 hours a month)

Our cleanups take place Saturday mornings from 9am-11am, students should look at our events calendar at surfridersd.org to ensure enough of these dates work for them.

- participation in a public beach cleanup counts for max 2 hours of service.
- assisting a site captain with setup and hosting counts for 3-4 hours of service.
- data tallying/entry counts for 2-4 hours of service in addition to the cleanup itself. As we always have extra data from private cleanups, students can opt to earn extra hours with data too

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Students will learn about the types of land-based debris that pollutes our coastline and ocean with an emphasis on plastic pollution. They will be exposed to Surfrider's multi-tiered plastic pollution initiative to address this environmental crisis through beach cleanups, community science in the form of data collection, and additional policy and educational efforts to prevent plastic pollution from occurring in the first place. Our beach cleanup program is the gateway to our entire plastic pollution initiative, as we leverage our community and the data they collect to push forward real solutions to a critical global environmental issue.

Opportunity Training

Safety training, beach cleanup event process training, and training around our data tallying and entry system.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Our cleanups are outdoor events with occasional large crowds at the beginning and end. Any student who feels unsafe doing outdoor service with others during the Covid pandemic should refrain from this opportunity. Outside of that, there are risks involved in any outdoor event and we do require that all volunteers sign a liability waiver to protect Surfrider.
