Opportunity Summary 

The Legal Aid Society of San Diego (LASSD) is the largest non-profit law firm in San Diego County. We offer pro bono legal services to low-income individuals and families who call San Diego County their home. LASSD's mission is to improve the lives of persons in our community by advancing justice through effective, efficient, and vigorous legal advocacy, outreach and education. Student volunteers will assist self-represented litigants with housing defense, civil harassment, elder abuse, and domestic violence restraining orders, petitions to change names and gender markers, and conservatorships of the person. Under the supervision of experienced attorneys, volunteers will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with self-represented litigants at one of our four courthouse clinics, gaining invaluable interview and client management experience.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Volunteers will be expected to help identify and explain alternative legal remedies to clinic participants, assist in the preparation of relevant pleadings, take declarations, and prepare litigants for the next steps in the court process. Additionally, some interns will learn data collection, court observation, professional skills, client interviewing, legal document preparation, and administrative and/or translation skills.
